Exploring Chinese culture through art and crafts

Ku Sum Yui Yobie, born and raised in Hong Kong.I am trying to explore myself, my personality and my thoughts on life through my works. I am most interested in exploring Chinese culture and hope to expand my creativity through traditional art and crafts.Skills of making threaded flower and calligraphy are used in creating my works. I like how I have to be calm and stay focus for a long time while creating to prevent reversible mistakes. It clears out my other thoughts and makes me focus on the present. My personal experience or the connection between me and my family are usually the themes of my works because they are some of the most important elements that shape my life.

Ink on paper

The poem Memories of Luofu Mountain was composed by my ancestor Gu Chengzhi. He wrote the poem to remember his family and hometown by describing his life living in Luofu Mountain in Guangzhou when he was young after the death of his parents. It reminds me of my family, along with childhood memories of hiking and playing with them in the mountains during holidays. It also acts as a warning that I should spend more time with my family members rather than over-focusing on my own life as they are getting older and will probably leave earlier than me in the future.

Paper, wire, ceramic, plastic beads, thread
8 x 8 x 20 cm each
Inspired by the wall decoration on the platforms of stations along the East rail line, I create a series of useful and decorative flower hairpins using Chinese traditional technique of "Chanhua 纏花" to record the childhood memories of traveling through the raailway with my mother.

Oil on canvas
41 x 51 cm
Elements of Chinese art and Western art are combined in this work. Using oil paint as a medium, I painted the art supplies I use for Chinese painting. The unity of colours and shapes of the objects create a sense of stability. The negative space around the objects is similar to the blank space in Chinese painting.
1st & 2nd Arts Ambassadors Bazaar (Organized by Hong Kong Arts Development Council)
I joined the bazzar as a stall holder to sell my crafts and as a teacher to teach students to make accessories with "liuli 琉璃" (glass), wire and thread by using part of "Chanhua纏花" technique.Instagram: @white_deer_handiwork
